The Unexpected
December 31st, 2022 · Ottawa
On the last night of 2022, the unexpected.
A vagabond rolled into what would one day become his in-laws' home, summoned at the urging of a cousin and entirely unaware that his life was about to change. Meanwhile, the daughter of the house — a self-searching woman whose relationship status was, at best, unclear — expected only to greet a passing stranger and watch him disappear into the night. She certainly did not expect to meet her future husband. Especially since, as she had stated quite firmly, military men were undatable. It was, in her estimation at the time, one of the very few trades she could not abide.
Despite this — the connection was instantaneous.
They talked for hours, through the New Year countdown and well into the small hours of the morning. Eventually, the pre-dawn light saw one of them "subtly" shown the door. And so a wonderful adventure began.

The Pursuit
Early January 2023 · Ottawa to Petawawa
Four days of seeing each other every day, and then it was time for farewells. Patrick had to return to Petawawa, where he was stationed. But Catherine would not let him simply slip away into the night. Her heart was set.
That very Friday, she made the six-hour drive north to spend the entire weekend with the man she had quietly elected to make hers. Pleasantly surprised by her conviction, Patrick was — at this point — still entirely clueless as to his fate.
The following Monday, Catherine, never one to wait around when she knew her own mind, updated their relationship status to dating. Patrick, equally happy to make things clear from the start, was willing to give it a shot.

The First Test
Mid-January 2023 · Petawawa to British Columbia
Because no military relationship can exist without long distance, the very next weekend Patrick was off to British Columbia for a week-long course.
Not a single day passed without the two of them speaking — by phone, by text, by every channel they could find. It was the first test.
Neither was deterred.

Unspoken No Longer
February 2023 · Ottawa Airport
Returning home from across the country, Patrick was met at the Ottawa airport by his new girlfriend — a quiet declaration that she was already all in, and that he had only just begun to grasp how all in.
That magical weekend ended too quickly. But by the time it did, the feeling in both their hearts had become a certainty looking for a voice. It was only a question of who would speak first.
In Catherine's car, idling beside Patrick's own ride home, the two of them circled the words for what felt like an eternity. Catherine had it on the tip of her tongue. She wanted to be the one to say it. And then — to her quiet, lovestruck disappointment — Patrick stole the moment, and the first I love you was his.

Building a Home
April 2023 · Valcartier
A couple in more than just name, it was time to plan for the future. Military life teaches you early that postings come without warning, and with an unknown move looming at the end of Patrick's flying course just under two years away, one question needed an answer: Were the two of them compatible in cohabitation?
April brought Patrick a temporary transfer to Valcartier, and the young couple moved in together for the first time, building their own home in a place that was new to them both.
It was a resounding success.

First Adventure Together
December 2023 · Mexico
To celebrate nearly a year together — and bracing for what was coming, with Patrick's posting to Manitoba set for January 2024 — it was time for a proper escape. It was off to Mexico.
Despite cooler-than-expected weather, a brief illness, and winds that occasionally had opinions of their own, the trip was a memorable interlude. If anything, it cemented their love more deeply: a shared piece of evidence that they could weather small storms together and still come home laughing.

The Great Longing
January 2024 to April 2025 · Manitoba
This was the true test.
Fourteen months spent half a country apart. If that does not strain a relationship, what does?
And yet, they made it work.
Catherine visited as often as she could. Patrick did the same, though his window was considerably narrower. She even managed — somehow — to plan and pull off a complete surprise party for his thirtieth birthday, halfway across the country.
It was a hard season. But it was also the season that proved their bond was the kind that does not break under pressure. It only deepens.

Wings
April 11th, 2025 · Southport, Manitoba
The final stretch of the long road.
Catherine and her family travelled all the way to Southport, Manitoba, to be present for the brilliant accomplishment of receiving the Wings standard of the Royal Canadian Air Force. It marked the start of the next chapter — Patrick was now formally qualified in his trade, with a posting to Edmonton waiting on the other side.
The two of them would soon be reunited. Permanently. Only two months of part-time distance remained as Patrick returned to Petawawa, and they spent every weekend they could planning the move out west.

Together at Last
June 30th, 2025 · Edmonton
They moved to Alberta together — establishing a new home in military quarters, far from family but as close to one another as two people can be.
Settling in was its own kind of work. There were boxes, and time zones, and the quiet challenge of building a life in a place neither of them was from. They lived up to it. Slowly, the house became a home, and their love did not waver.

The Proposal
August 28th, 2025 · Ponte Sant'Angelo, Rome
Two years in the planning. Patrick's groomsman Davit was getting married in his homeland of Georgia, and if one must travel halfway across the world for a wedding, one might as well make a proper adventure of it.
Three weeks among the bones of history, in cities that have stood for millennia. Halfway through, in the gentle hours of dawn on August 28th, 2025, on the Ponte Sant'Angelo in Rome — beneath the watchful gaze of the angels, in the romantic capital of the world — Patrick dropped to one knee.
Through the happy tears, she said yes.

One More Trial
April 2026 · A Short Separation
With wedding planning underway and Catherine truly settled in their still-new home, Patrick was off once more.
Manitoba had been the test. Three months would be little more than a footnote.
If anything, it would only sharpen the edge of how good it feels to come home.

Forever Begins
July 2026 · Home, for good
Patrick returned in July — and this time, there was no countdown to the next departure on the kitchen calendar.
Just a wedding to plan. A future to build. A pair of armchairs that finally belong to two people in the same place at the same time. There are still postings ahead — military life will see to that — but there is no version of what comes next that does not have both of them in it.
Six years from a New Year's Eve neither of them saw coming, and almost a year out from the day they will exchange vows beneath an arch on the cliffs of Charlevoix, the story is no longer about distance.
It is about everything that comes after.
It is about everything that comes after.
And the next chapter begins with you.
We are honoured beyond words to have you with us on May 22nd, 2027.
